The casual idea tossed out at a Basin Electric staff meeting six years ago blazed a trail of shaven heads throughout the heartland of the United States.
In 2008, employees, partnering organizations, communities and citizens lined up and more than 100 people shaved their heads and raised nearly $100,000. Since then, the annual St. Baldrick’s event has grown into a multi-state campaign and raised more than $750,000 in its first five years.
St. Baldrick’s recognized Basin Electric for its long-term commitment and generosity to children with cancer with an award presentation Dec. 17 at Basin Electric Headquarters in Bismarck, ND.
Heather Kash, St. Baldrick’s senior director of Corporate Relations and Risk Management, presented the award to Basin Electric CEO and General Manager Andrew M. Serri.
“It’s pretty elite company you’re in. The rest of the companies are big-money insurance companies that have founded the events,” Kash said. “Companies out of New York and the East Coast that have really put a lot of corporate dollars into it, and you guys have really gotten there as much by the employee efforts as by the corporate dollars. So, it’s incredible.”
At the award presentation, Serri shared that both he and his 10-year-old son, Gabe, will be shavees at Basin Electric’s upcoming St. Baldrick’s event on March 15, 2013. View a preview of the event.
“What a wonderful cause, when you think about children fighting cancer,” Serri said. “Let’s have a great campaign this year, and let’s set the bar even higher. Let’s go.”
Basin Electric’s name and logo will be placed on St. Baldrick’s t-shirts that will be distributed nationwide.
“It surprises me every day, how much people give, how generous people can be with their heads, with their wallets, with their time. It’s generosity like that, that has built the organization,” Kash said. “Children with cancer have a much better hope for the future because of people like you.”
During her time in Bismarck, Kash also toured the completed Amber’s Dream project at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Bismarck. During the tour Kristi Schmidt, Sanford Health Foundation director of development, expressed her gratitude toward Basin Electric. The lead gift — $80,000 for the children's playroom — came from the local electric cooperatives of Basin Electric, Capital Electric, KEM Electric, Mor-Gran-Sou Electric, Roughrider Electric and Slope Electric.

The world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer research, the St. Baldrick's Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Since 2000, more than 189,660 volunteers -- including over 17,200 women -- have shaved in solidarity with children with cancer at events in dozens of countries and every U.S. state. Thanks to generous friends and family, these shavees have raised over $117 million for life-saving research, and each is a walking billboard for the cause!
Despite tremendous progress, cancer remains the No. 1 killer disease of children in the United States and Canada. The foundation's mission is to raise awareness and funds to cure kids' cancer by supporting cancer research and fellowships.
