Basin Electric announces a new partner in carbon capture project.

Basin Electric Power Cooperative is taking a new partner to explore ways to retain carbon dioxide emissions.

The Bismarck cooperative is hiring HTC Purenergy, of Regina, Saskatchewan, and Doosan Babcock Energy for the project. Doosan has American headquarters in Atlanta.

Basin spokesman Daryl Hill says the companies will draft a plan for capturing carbon dioxide from the Antelope Valley electric power plant near Beulah.

Antelope Valley burns coal to generate electricity. The process releases carbon dioxide that is believed to contribute to global warming.

Last year, Basin hired a company called Powerspan for the project. But Hill says the cooperative decided to switch to HTC Purenergy and Doosan Babcock.

If a project is built, the federal Energy Department has promised up to $300 million to help pay for it.
