His pony-tail is more than a foot in length. And for the past several years this University of Mary student has been proud to sport his long, flowing locks-whether that be in a ponytail or stuffed under a football helmet.
Now, he's letting somene get out the scissors.
Despite his camouflage get-up, Nick Thornton-Jack can easily be picked out of crowds. Not just because he's one of the super fans cheering on the Mauraders, but because of this. (Nick Thornton-Jack/Donating his hair) "It's fun to have, it's a signature now. People know who the big islander kid, from the University of Mary, with the long hair who played offensive line. Now I am just going to be the big islander kid."
But after making a bet with U-Mary's baseball coach, Nick decided to would lose his locks for a chance of getting an at-bat opportunity this spring
(Nick Thornton-Jack/Donating his hair) "From there it's just kind of blossomed in to more of a public thing, more of a fundraiser." Nick's donating his hair to Locks of Love, and because he met his one-thousand dollars goal for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, Nick decided to shave what was left.
(Nick Thornton-Jack/Donating his hair) "Its a worthy cause and its just something that kind of keeps me grounded and reminds me of where I am from, who I've lost. It's a way to get closer to them I think." A small act that may leave him feeling bare... "what it feels like to be bald..." but when it comes to helping others he is still covered.
Locks of Love will need about five to ten more hair donations just like Nick's before one hair piece is made. The organization provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada that are suffering from any medical condition that would cause them to lose their hair.
Nick wasn't the only one shaving it all off tonight-U-Mary. Dr. Chad Litton also went under the clippers. The two men together have raised closed to $1,500 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which is an organization that raises money for children with cancer.
