Basin Electric, along with Capital Electric, KEM Electric, Mor-Gran-Sou Electric, Roughrider Electric, and Slope Electric cooperatives are providing the lead gift towards the remodeling and expansion of the children’s wing at Medcenter One hospital in Bismarck, ND.
The Medcenter One Foundation is currently at the halfway point of a $695,000 fundraising campaign for “Amber’s Dream,” inspired by the ideas of Amber DesRoches, a young cancer patient. The cooperative’s lead gift is providing the play room for the children’s wing, and will be named to refl ect the cooperative’s commitment to community and to the project.
Amber DesRoches was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, a blood cancer, in December of 2003. She battled cancer for four straight years and died at the age 15. While undergoing treatment, DesRoches envisioned a transformed children’s wing at the hospital where she spent so much time. She penciled thoughts and sketches of an Old World Peter Pan theme in her journal, including a magical, imaginative setting throughout every room and hallway.
The renovation and expansion work for Amber’s Dream is tentatively planned to begin Thursday, Oct. 1. A news conference will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 2:00 p.m. to announce the commencement of Amber’s Dream to the media. The conference will be held in the medical staff conference rooms located on the ground floor of the Outpatient Services Center, 414 N. 7th Street. Look for more information following the press conference in next week’s Basin Update and on www.basinelectric.com.
