Every winter for the last few years, Basin Electric’s membership has surpassed its billing peak from the previous year. It seems this winter is no different. With the recent cold snap, Dawn Hauck, Basin Electric near-term load forecasting and scheduling coordinator, reported the cooperative’s membership has likely reached a new all-time billing peak.
The previous winter and all-time billing peak of 2,421 megawatts was set in December 2008. In calculating the anticipated new peak, Hauck said the previous all-time billing peak was adjusted to reflect the new power sale obligations to Corn Belt Power Cooperative, which began in October.
“This early peak is just an indication that we’re continuing to get load growth through the region,” said Dave Raatz, Basin Electric manager of marketing and power supply planning.
Raatz said, though a peak is expected, exact numbers won’t be known until the end of December when billing is complete.
