Work on the clean cooling water project at the Great Plains Synfuels Plant is officially under way. Maertens-Brenny Construction Company of Minneapolis, MN, mobilized Aug. 22, and began digging for the foundation and necessary underground work.
Bob Weir, project management supervisor, said Maertens-Brenny is currently working on relocating existing underground piping and adding new piping.
In January, Dakota Gasification Company board of directors approved the engineering portion of the project. Burns and McDonnell of Kansas City, MO, was awarded the contract. In March, directors approved the execution of contracts for the $77 million project.
The project will add 14 plate and frame heat exchangers, including ancillary equipment that will be used to cross exchange the existing dirty water with the new clean water system, according to Weir.
“Adding the new system will allow the existing exchangers to see clean water instead of dirty water, extending time between maintenance turnarounds and reducing maintenance costs,” Weir said. “As a result, turnaround work will be completed every two years instead of every year after the system is added.”
The majority of the project will be completed in the next 18 months in preparation for the tie-in of the new cooling water system to be completed during the black plant maintenance turnaround scheduled for summer 2013.
Weir said the underground and foundation work is expected to be completed by Dec. 1.
