Environment

Here's how we clean up coal: we gasify it. Make it into clean-burning gas. That's what Dakota Gas has been doing for nearly 40 years. Gas is a clean-burning fossil fuel. We don't say it's renewable, and we don't say it's green. We do say that gas is the cleanest fossil fuel, and more coal can be cleaned than ever before by gasifying it.

We believe cleaning coal is necessary and attainable. The effort to stop all coal-based energy production is not only unnecessary, it's impractical. Coal is an abundant American fuel source; it can help America achieve its goal of energy independence. Dakota Gas is something of an expert on this subject, and we have clean energy solutions for today and tomorrow.

Take some time to discover the benefits of gas made from coal. Talk with people in the energy industry. Learn more about how emissions are scrubbed from Basin Electric power plants, and book a tour at the Great Plains Synfuels Plant near Beulah, North Dakota. We'll tell you more about how clean coal can be.

Commitment and Compliance

Dakota Gas has a strong commitment to the environment. We have improved our environmental footprint by achieving better reliabilities, improved efficiency, and meeting environmental goals. The Synfuels Plant meets or exceeds all state and federal laws.

Reclamation

Be good to the land, it’ll return the favor. It’s a simple idea that Basin Electric has fiercely defended throughout its history.

Basin Electric was the first utility in the nation to require that strip-mined land be returned to rolling countryside. That requirement was written into Basin Electric's first coal contract long before rules and regulations on mined land reclamation were enacted.

Efficiency and Conservation

Dakota Gas follows the standard practice of its parent company, Basin Electric, concerning environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance: "Always have; always will."
